Are trade deficits bad?

Economics is not my long suit. In fact it's not even my leisure suit. When it comes to understanding currency exchange, trade economics and budgetary minutiae, my eyes glaze over. My daughter, a CPA with a double major in econ and accounting has even given up trying to explain things to me. So when I read Tech Central article about trade deficits and the value of the dollar, I was surprised to find that I understood it.

That doesn't mean I know if it's right or not. It sure sounded right though.
